  3. Dr. Diaz,
I think you had tried to contact me in the past but, I had gotten side tracked by a second back surgery and did not get back with you. My hx. is I’m a 49 yr old semi-retired RN. I had gotten 4 or 5 herniated lumbar discs in my 30’s when I was working in the hospital. I was told to try to avoid back surgery but, to quit working in the hospital. Then, I worked homecare, Case Management, and then Occupational health at General Motors. I went into early menopause and one night at work I went to stand up and I couldn’t standup straight after that. I kept working even though I wanted to die. I went to a Chiropractor and PT. Then, I tripped on a pot hole at a gas station and fx. a thoracic vertebra. I had surgery for that but, then my PCP found out that the cement didn’t go into the fracture after the suppossive surgery. My curve in my back went from the high 20’s to the 80’s in 5 months. I lost my job of course. I stayed in PT of and on. I went to 3 or 4 docs. I did see one doc up here and his program is called Spinecor, Dr. Morningstar. He runs something a little similar to yours but, he lost my trust right away. He has a degree in Philosophy of course so, you know what that means? He put me in a wrap brace but it’s not like your’s like everyone else might think. It hurt like living hell. Excuse my language. He wanted to do 3 chiropractic sessions with me sedated to try to help my herniated discs before he could do anything else. Then, he tried to manipulate my back and I was left in screaming pain for 3 weeks and when I tried to call him to tell him, I never received a call back for 3 whole weeks. I talked with my aunt who is a retired nurse from University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI. She got a hold of some of her past coworkers and they got me set up with Dr Frank LaMarca, Neurosurgery. I have had two major surgeries. I have been caged in 4 lumbar vertebraes and I had rods and screws. I have been fused from my ilium to T-3 plus I have an old painfuser that they were suppose to have taken out because of old batteries but, they didn’t. My surgeon left U of M hospital to go work elsewhere so, now I have a new surgeon. He’s not happy with me because I had quit smoking for a long time but, like a dummy I started again. I’m trying to go back to some kind of nursing mainly due to my son will be starting dental school this August. He needs another vehicle and I need to probably get a divorce and living off of social security is a joke. Anyways, I have tried to stay up with my exercises except for getting that bad flu. My main problem is I can’t walk very far and then I want to bend forward and almost collapse. I walked like that for over a year. Do you think I should just keep trying to do more exercise besides quitting smoking again and quitting sugar? My son and I are up on all of the vitamins and minerals. My son was born with bilateral club feet. I also, found out that my half sister on my mom’s side has the same back as mine, I have a brother who had 3 back surgeries, and another half sister who had both of her hips replaced by the age of 33. All on mom’s side. I’m not a doctor but I think there’s some genetics there plus environmental. We all were smokers at one time in our lives and some of us drank sugar pop or beer. We all have high cholesterol even though I don’t eat fat. I think it’s mainly sugar and my sister with the bad hips s from alcohol. Her Triglycerides were in the 3000’s. Anyways, sorry about the long history. Ever since all of this has happened to me, I have done some research and wished there was a way I could find a job in helping people who are going threw this painful nightmare. In the meantime see if there’s anything else I can do to help my pain and strength. I live in Fenton, MI which is 15 miles south of Flint. I have been told that I shouldn’t wear braces anymore due to making my muscles weak again but, if it would help my situation, I’m game. I think the closest office you have to me is in Chicago. That’s if you think I’m a candidate? I’m trying to get a job where I can work from home but I might have to drive to Detroit everyday for 6 months. It’s for BCBS hopefully. Oh, I still take pain meds but, I have weaned myself down some. I guess I’m still not totally fused yet either. I have offered to let U of M, use me as a guinea pig if it would help others and even help with research. The only thing I won’t do is have chiropractic sessions done on me. My Aunt did that after 2 back surgeries and now she is worse. The chiropractor was her friend. She’s a retired pharmacist. Again, I apologize for not returning your past calls. Thank you for your time, Ellen Bowden

    1. Ellen,

I’m sorry to hear about your extensive health problems. Just to let you know, Dr. Morningstar does not use SpineCor, nor does he have any affiliation with SpineCor. He use a scoliosis brace that he created called the Scoliosis Activity Suit, (formerly know as the Tornado Suit)

Regarding your request for recommendations for you. Even though you’ve written a rather extensive history, your case is simply too complex for a doctor to give you advice based just on this information.

What I would recommend instead is that you do to start by calling our office to schedule a Free Scoliosis Phone Consult to discuss your case in detail with one of our doctors nearest you to find out if our treatments might be right for you. If it appears they might be able to help you, then the next step would be an in office Consultation where the doctor would be able to examine you directly to determine if our treatments, which might include SpineCor.

  4. The braces that Spinecor, Dr. Morningstar-Chiropractor uses don’t look a like.

    1. Ellen, Dr. Morningstars brace is called a Scoliosis Activity Suit. Our brace is called SpineCor. While both are considered “Dynamic” scoliosis braces, there are some definite differences I will briefly outline here. For more information about the SpineCor Difference click on the link below:

SpineCor was developed by a team of orthopedists. engineers, orthotists, physical therapists and designers at a research hospital in Canada. It has over 20 years of clinical research supporting it’s clinical efficacy. The material used in it’s construction is breathable to help keep it from getting too hot while being wore. The set up for SpineCor is based on the patients curve pattern to help create muscle memory into the direction of correction. Also, the corrective bands are secured to a belt that wraps around the pelvis so that SpineCor can give corrective action while the patient is sitting, standing, walking and even while laying down.

      vs.

The Scoliosis Activity Suit (aka – The Tornado Suit) was developed by Dr. Mark Morningstar, D.C. 4- 5 years ago. To my knowledge there is only one clinical study done on it, The material is largely composed of neopreme, which is the same material wet suites are made of and gets very hot very quickly. The main corrective band attaches to the thing so really only provides corrective movement while the patient is walking. Whenever the person’s hip is flexed it renders the corrective movements useless as the corrective band slacks, thus it is not effective while standing or sitting.
